Hiking around summits and rivers of the natural park

The hiking routes that cover Oñati traverse landscapes of unique beauty and pass through spectacular areas such as the Aizkorri-Aratz Natural Park.

Its routes for all levels -including an adapted one in Gomiztegi- offer settings of forests, pastures and extensive rocky areas which blend into harmonious landscapes creating a magical setting for hiking.

GR-289 – The steps of the bear (97,1km – Demanding – 33:25´)

PR-Gi 107 – West Oñati: Route around Garagaltza district (5,7 km – Simple – 2:15´)

Route which offers an interesting view over the Oñati valley. The route leaves from the town centre and runs past a series of farmhouses in Garagaltza district, along several old paths and roads that still survive in the area. Points of interest: historical town of Oñati, Garagaltza district, Usako recreational area.

SL-GI 10 – East Oñati: At the foot of Aloña (8,5 km – Simple – 3:00´)

Classic route which offers wide views over the town of Oñati. The route begins in the historical town and passes through the most rural districts, offering hikers wonderful glimpses of both natural and ethnographic treasures. Points of interest: Zumeltzegi Tower (Middle Ages) and Larraña, Olabarrieta and Murgia districts.

This route, which runs through six of the neighbourhoods of Araotz, takes us first to rural world, offering later a series of stunning views. After visiting the magic cave of Aitzulo, we arrive at the Araozta Reservoir and, from there, we can easily reach the Santa Krutz Chapel. Near Andarto Txiki we turn around again towards Araotz,and enter an area punctuated by farmhouses. Points of interest: San Miguel Parish Church of Araotz, Santa Cruz Chapel, General Elorza’s birth place, etc.

Arantzazu PR-GI 3004 The smugglers route (12,8 km – Demanding- 4:45´)

Extremely beautiful route which leads us first along a stretch of the old road to Calahorra, before heading off towards the Madina neighbourhood. The route links part of Arantzazu and Araotz districts and passes through the unique Jaturabe setting. Points of interest: Arrikrutz, Calahorra Road, Jaturabe…

Route which shows us the most secret side of Arantzazu. After walking down the ravine of the Arantzazu River and crossing the Iturrigorri area, the path takes us around the Arriona summit, through a stunningly beautiful forest and two pastures of the area. PR-GI-106 – Arrasate – Arantzazu pilgrim route (16,7km – Demanding – 6:00´)

This route begins in Arrasate and ends in Arantzazu and is longer and more demanding than the other ones. It is a classic pilgrim route which passes through lands belonging to three municipalities in quick succession: Arrasate, Aretxabaleta and Oñati. The route leads us through Bedoña and Larriño districts, the Urkulu Reservoir, the Urruxola district, the slopes of Orkatzategi, the surprising Jaturabe Valley and the ancient Arrikrutz and Gesaltza inns,
before finally arriving in Arantzazu along the old road. Points of interest: Santa Eulalia Parish Church (Bedoña), Orkatzategi Crags, Gesaltza-Arrikrutz Galleries…
